Q2 2024 Newsletter
Recently, an insidious threat has been lurking in the digital shadows, preying on unsuspecting businesses like those in our Western New York community. Spear phishing, a highly targeted form of cyber attack, has evolved into a more sophisticated tactic that is now infiltrating legitimate document sharing services such as Dropbox, Docusign, Google Drive, Onedrive, and SharePoint.
Imagine this scenario: you receive an email from a trusted platform like Dropbox, seemingly innocuous, with a link to a document hosted on the legitimate Dropbox page. However, unbeknownst to you, hackers have compromised a genuine cloud sharing account, giving them the perfect disguise to slip past firewalls and other traditional security measures.
The Email Spoofing Problem
Imagine receiving an email seemingly from your bank. It requests urgent action. You click a link, enter your details, and boom – your information is compromised. The common name for this is email spoofing. It’s where scammers disguise their email addresses. They try to appear as legitimate individuals or organizations. Scammers spoof a business’s email address. Then they email customers and vendors pretending to be that business.
These deceptive tactics can have devastating consequences on companies. These include:
- Financial losses
- Reputational damage
- Data breaches
- Loss of future business
Unfortunately, email spoofing is a growing problem. It makes email authentication a critical defense measure.
What is Email Authentication?
Email authentication is a way of verifying that your email is legitimate. This includes verifying the server sending the email. It also includes reporting back unauthorized uses of a company domain.
Email authentication uses three key protocols, and each has a specific job: SPF (Sender Policy Framework): Records the IP addresses authorized to send email for a domain.
With cyber threats evolving at an alarming pace, staying ahead of the curve is crucial. It’s a must for safeguarding sensitive information.
Catch of the Quarter: Facebook Deletion Scam
Recently, there has been a surge in Facebook scams targeting users with alarming messages claiming their pages are at risk of permanent deletion due to alleged copyright infringement. These deceptive messages often arrive via Messenger, urging recipients to confirm their account details to avoid deletion. However, these messages are nothing but spam, attempting to trick users into providing sensitive information.
How to Stay Safe: The best course of action in such scenarios is to avoid clicking any links or providing any personal information. Instead, promptly report the messages as spam to Facebook to protect both yourself and others from falling victim to such fraudulent schemes.
