Back to School Tech: Is Your Child Really Safe Online?
School supplies aren’t the only thing your child needs this fall. With so much of their education and social life online, digital safety is just as important as backpacks and pencils.
Even with parental controls, kids can stumble onto harmful websites, overshare personal information, or fall for scams. Cyber risks don’t just threaten their privacy, but they can also put your family’s data at risk.
Best Practices for Parents:
-
Set up parental controls on all devices and Wi-Fi.
-
Talk to your kids about safe browsing and why they shouldn’t share personal info.
-
Keep software, apps, and security programs updated.
-
Consider monitoring tools to get alerts if something looks suspicious.
Want peace of mind this school year? While you’re making sure your kids are safe online, don’t forget about your business. Reach out to our team to learn how to secure your company’s data and keep cyber threats out of your workplace.
Catch of the Month: AI-Generated Voice Scams
Scammers are now using artificial intelligence to clone voices and trick victims into handing over money or sensitive information. All they need is a short audio clip, often pulled from social media or voicemail, to create a convincing fake. Victims have reported receiving urgent calls from what sounds like a boss, coworker, or even a family member asking for immediate help.
This new tactic, sometimes called “vishing” (voice phishing), is especially dangerous for businesses. A fake executive call could pressure an employee into sending funds, sharing login credentials, or bypassing normal security checks.
How to Defend Yourself:
-
Verify Requests – Always confirm urgent or unusual requests by calling back on a known number.
-
Educate Employees – Train staff to recognize the signs of social engineering and voice phishing.
-
Use Multi-Factor Authentication – Prevents scammers from accessing accounts even if they trick someone into giving up a password.
-
Limit Public Audio – Be mindful of posting long video or audio clips online that could be used to train AI.
-
Establish Protocols – Set up clear internal policies for money transfers and data access so no single call can override safeguards.
AI voice scams thrive on urgency and fear. Taking a moment to verify can protect both your business and your peace of mind.
