That is not how these attacks usually work. Small businesses are attractive because they often have valuable data, active cash flow, limited internal security resources, and enough operational pressure to make downtime painful. A company with 10 to 50 employees may not look like a headline-making target, but to an attacker, it can look like an efficient one. The goal is not always to find the biggest victim. It is to find the easiest path to a payout. A clean exit starts with having the right controls in place from day one. Create Individual Accounts - Avoid shared logins. Individual accounts make it easier to track activity and remove access when someone leaves. Keep Business Accounts Company-Owned - Maintain a clear record of software, subscriptions, administrators, and account ownership so nothing gets overlooked. Use Company-Managed Devices - Work should happen on devices the business can secure, manage, and recover. Limit Access by Role - Employees should only have access to the systems and information they need to do their jobs. Keep Client Information in Company Systems - Use shared inboxes, CRM platforms, and other centralized tools so important information does not leave with one employee. Disable Access Promptly - Coordinate departures with IT so email, applications, remote access, and devices can be secured at the appropriate time. The best offboarding process starts with strong onboarding. When accounts, devices, permissions, and data are managed consistently, employee exits become far simpler and less risky. In a recent Texas case, a school employee reportedly lost $50,000 after callers spoofed the local sheriff’s phone number and used the names of real law-enforcement personnel to make the threat feel legitimate.   #### How to Stay Safe: Courts and law enforcement do not call demanding payment to cancel an arrest warrant for missed jury duty. Caller ID can be spoofed, so do not trust the number on your screen.
